Located in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s actual birthplace, The Royal Shakespeare Theatre first opened in 1932.
The architect was Elisabeth Scott and the theatre became the first important work erected in Britain from the designs of a woman architect. The design by Scott included a proscenium-arch stage and seating capacity of about 1,400 spaced across three tiers. A grade II listed building, the building has several notable Art Deco features including the staircase and corridors at either side of the auditorium.
The Royal Shakespeare Company has renovated the Theatre as part of a 112.8m transformation project which saw the creation of a new 1040+ seat, a thrust stage auditorium which brings actors and audiences close together. The new theatre is also more accessible to people with disabilities and offers a more comfortable experience.
The style of their washrooms needed to emulate the features adopted from years of fashion and trends reflected in the theatres décor. The washroom design showcases a sleek, sharp, clean feel with colours that complement the original Art Deco from years ago. The greys, whites and dark navy blues are lit up with lights above the mirrors allowing the user to feel they are using a dresser, a nice touch given the acting
framework of the building.
Products Used
Stainless steel was the chosen colour of the products to use in the washroom. Our BC2003-BM Dolphin high-speed, behind-mirror hand dryer was supplied which can be interchangeable with a paper towel dispenser if needed. We also supplied our BC2001 hand dryer for the washrooms where the hand dryer needed to be visibile for users. For the toilet roll dispenser we supplied our BC4302, a stainless steel bulk pack dispenser, an interleaved toilet tissue dispenser ideal for accessible washrooms.
They also added to the accessible washroom our BC5083 DOC M pack which includes five grab rails, one hinged support rail and one padded back rest. Other products added into the washroom were our BC913 stainless steel horizontal soap dispenser, ideal for confined spaces for example between basin and mirror and our BC921 24 litre stainless steel surface mounted bin, wall mounted with an open top.
